A guide to New Caravan Standards AS/NZS3001.2:2022
Important information for customers installing batteries into Caravans, Recreational Vehicles and 4WDs.
As Powerhouse batteries, we're excited to see the caravan industry's progression towards higher standards by the adoption of AS/NZS3001.2.2022 which came into effect in November of 2023. These changes not only elevate the safety and performance of caravans but also reflect our commitment to innovation and reliability. We encourage customers to do their research prior to installation planning so that they are aware of the requirements of the standard. Below is a short guide on what the standards entail and answers to frequently asked questions on this topic.
FAQS
What is the new standard?
The new standard touches on requirements for various features of electrical systems in Caravans, RVs and Camper trailers. The standard also includes requirements for wiring, inverters, solar panels and batteries as well as the need for batteries to comply with the AS IEC 62619. It has been designed to reduce the instances of hazardous installations causing fire and threat to life.
What are the changes?
The new changes include requirements for installation, mounting and wiring of electrical systems in RVs. These include inverters, solar, wiring and batteries. For a guide on how to do this we recommend downloading our information sheet available for each battery we sell. This provides a guide to the basics of what is required, however we still recommend you engage a professional to ensure your installation is compliant.
There are considerable changes to the way batteries are required to be mounted, connected and ventilated.
Who needs to comply?
The standard applys to new electrical installations in cars, caravans and recreational vehicles using battery power systems. Previous installations adhere to standards when built at that time so if the basic safety standards are met then these requirements do not affect the build. Any repairs to the installations are acceptable as long as methods, fittings and fixtures used were acceptable the time of the original installation. This also adheres to direct replacements.
However alterations such as replacing lead acid batteries with lithium batteries need to adhere to the new standard and will not compromise the remainder of the installation.
How to install?
When installing batteries need to be placed within a sealed enclosure, with venting directing gases outside of any habitable areas whilst making sure that the enclosure is environmentally protected. The enclosure must be accessible for installation and maintenance as well as having effective seals. Special tools or a screwdriver must be required to access the enclosure. There is no guidance on materials in the compliance but it is assumed that the batteries have a sturdy enclosure that will protect the battery in many different conditions.
For a guide on installation we recommend downloading our information sheet available for each battery we sell.
What Powerhouse products are affected?
The new standards will affect all Powerhouse lithium battery installations where the battery is mounted permanently within the vehicle.
